Washing, blow drying, straightening and heat styling your hair every day can take its toll. Your head can be plagued with split ends and those pesky little wispy broken pieces of hair that stick up from your scalp. In the lead up to your wedding day, particularly if you have long hair or want to wear it down, take extra special care by treating your hair well and if you have damaged ends get them trimmed. Here are a few tips on how to prepare beautiful wedding day hair…
Wash hair sparingly
Washing your hair too often can leave it dried out, stripped of its natural oils and may actually damage your hair making it extremely fragile. Aim to use a good quality shampoo every other day or even twice a week if you can manage it, all you need is a 20p sized blob or if you have very thick or long hair a 50p size.
Condition every time you shampoo
Use conditioner that matches your hair type, length and treatment damage. If you have dyed hair it probably needs a little more love than natural hair. Try to deep condition every week, it’s a really good way of keeping hair soft, healthy and moisturised but make sure you base it on hair type. For example:
- Fine hair: if you have very limp hair, try a botanical oil treatment before you shampoo. Use lavender or tea-tree oil, for example, and work it under your cuticles before shampooing. Wash shampoo away, apply conditioner from the mid-shaft down to the end and leave in for one minute before washing out.
- Medium to thick hair: use a moisturising deep conditioning treatment with natural hydrators. Keep your conditioner light and apply it all over your head washing out after three minutes.
The right temperature
Make sure that the water is at the right temperature so that it isn’t too harsh on your scalp. It should be lukewarm rather than steaming hot; warm enough for you to be able to thoroughly rinse out all traces of shampoo and conditioner.
Massage your scalp
A massage is extremely beneficial to your hair not only because it relaxes your scalp but also stimulates the follicles, blood circulation and can add body. When you wash your hair, gently massage your scalp for two to three minutes but don’t rub aggressively.
Heat & letting hair breathe
Styling hair using excessive heat can cause damage, so keep your hair dryer and other heated appliances set to a low heat, particularly from six weeks onwards before the big day. Be very gentle with your hair, it needs to breathe so try not to keep it pulled back tightly for hours on end. Also try not to wear helmets, caps or hats for long periods of time.
